What is the Indonesia Response Team
Why was the Indonesia Response Team created?
West Sumatera Earthquake 2009The IRT was created in 2007 in response to the large number of emergencies in Indonesia. In the past four years the Indonesia country program has responded to at least nine disasters – the Yogyakarta earthquake in May 2006, the Jakarta floods in February 2007, West Sumatra Earthquake in March 2007, West Sumatra/Bengkulu earthquake in 2007, West Sumatera earthquake 2009, West Java earthquake 2009, Mentawai earthquake & tsunami 2010, Yogyakarta volcano eruption 2010 and the West Sumatera flooding 2011. The frequency of our response efforts highlights the fact that Indonesia is one of the most disaster prone countries in the world. Additionally, from Mercy Corps’ experience responding to international disasters, we have learned that our most effective emergency responses draw from the talents of our most experienced Mercy Corps staff – not from fresh recruits.

After the earthquake and tsunami struck the Mentawai Islands in 25 October of 2010, many the debris left in the old village after residents moved to higher land to escape if the same disaster come again. Masokut sub village, Beriulou village, is one of the sub villages that are directly affected in the district of South Sipora. From some of the great things people are needed after the earthquake and tsunami is a lighting problem in their new relocation. Before the tsunami struck Masokut community already has electrical installations which damaged by the tsunami. The distance they traveled to the capital district of South Sipora, Sioban to get fuel, not only non-technical constraints such as high winds and storms that cause high waves, coupled with cutting the frequency of availability of fuel in the Mentawai, this lighting problem is getting worse and complicated.
